Summer is here, and so is the sunshine-soaked race season in San Diego! Whether you’re training for a fast 5K or gearing up for a mid-summer half marathon, we’ve rounded up some essential training tips to help you stay strong, safe, and hydrated through the heat—plus a guide to some of San Diego’s most exciting summer races, including the historic Balboa Park 8 Miler.
☀️ Training Tips to Beat the Heat
- Run Smart with Timing
Aim to train during the cooler hours of the day—early morning or after sunset. Avoid peak heat between 11am and 4pm. One of the perks of running in San Diego? You can take advantage of the coastal breeze and ocean-cooling effect in the late afternoon, especially if you’re training near the beach - Hydrate Strategically
Drink water consistently throughout the day—not just before or after a run. For longer sessions, consider electrolyte supplements to help replenish what you sweat out. Start early and sip often! - Lighten Up
Wear moisture-wicking, light-colored clothing to reflect heat. Don’t forget a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen! - Dial in Your Effort
Heat and humidity slow everyone down. Listen to your body and adjust your pace accordingly—training in the heat is still great training, even if it’s slower. - Recover Smart
Cool showers, icy drinks, and proper fueling post-run can help your body bounce back faster.
